COUNTY ASSESSOR HARRY S. TRUMAN?

I’m not entirely certain why, but some people believe that the Assessor is a position lacking in humor, and they may be right! I’ve combed the Internet for assessor jokes – there are virtually none. But there is one clever story that I’d like to share with you.

Former Speaker Tip O’Neill relates this story from his book, All Politics is Local:

Truman started his career as a county judge in Missouri, but he was really more like a county supervisor. He couldn’t get by on the judge’s salary, so he asked the political boss of Kansas City, Tom Pendergast, for the job as a county assessor because it paid more. Pendergast told Harry Truman that he wasn’t smart enough to be the county assessor, so … he was going to send him to the Senate instead!

While I do my best to bring a little humor to my job, I am focused on effectively managing an important agency that treats taxpayers fairly and accurately, and helps as many property owners as possible save money on their property taxes.

I hope I can count on you to help me continue this important work for another four years so that I can continue to bring innovative and responsive change to the Office. With the election now just 3 weeks away, please consider supporting my re-election by making a contribution today.
