U.S. SENATOR KAMALA HARRIS BACKS JEFFREY PRANG IN RACE FOR L.A. COUNTY ASSESSOR

LOS ANGELES, CA – United States Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) has endorsed Los Angeles County Assessor Jeffrey Prang in his re-election bid.

“Assessor Prang has distinguished himself as an outstanding public servant whose leadership has injected needed transparency and innovation at the Office of the Assessor,” Senator Harris said. “He has done an exceptional job of modernizing the property tax system and is my first choice to continue this essential work on behalf of the people of Los Angeles County.”

In response, Assessor Prang said, “Senator Harris is an inspirational leader who, throughout her career, has demonstrated her unwavering commitment to serving the people of California. As a U.S. Senator and previously as California’s Attorney General, she has been a committed voice for fairness and social justice. I am humbled to have received her endorsement and am excited to continue the work which earned me Senator Harris’s support.”

Assessor Prang leads the largest public assessment agency in the United States. The work of the Assessor serves as the foundation for a property tax system that generates $1.4 trillion to support vital services provided by the County’s 81 school districts, 88 cities, and 35 county departments.

Since taking office in December 2014, Assessor Prang has implemented a series of improvements in operations and administration with the aim of enhancing efficiencies and striving for excellence in service to the public. The combination of these efforts has transformed Los Angeles County’s Office of the Assessor into the premier assessment agency in the nation.

Most notably, Assessor Prang has made a significant investment in upgrading technologies and enhanced public access to valuation information with the aim of fostering greater accuracy. He successfully led the charge to raise reporting thresholds, thereby improving efficiencies while lessening the financial and administrative burden on an estimated 50,000 small business owners.

The One-Stop Public Service Counter that Assessor Prang championed to help taxpayers quickly and easily navigate property tax issues now brings together elite staff from three County departments and has already resolved more than 100,000 constituent inquiries.

In the three years since Assessor Prang took charge of an agency undergoing a crisis in leadership, his transformative approach has earned recognition, including from peers around the world. The Certificate of Excellence in Assessment Administration awarded by the International Association of Assessing Officers is the highest honor an assessment agency may attain, and the Los Angeles County Office of the Assessor is the first and only agency in California to have earned it.
